Dr.Hurst is an academic bioethicist who often uses empirical methods within his work. He teaches medical humanities and ethics, issues of professionalism in medicine, medical jurisprudence, and epidemiology and biostatistics.

He earned his PhD in bioethics from Duquesne University, his MSc in global health and infectious diseases from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) and holds two graduate degrees in theology and moral theology/philosophy.

His research focuses on military medical ethics, xenotransplantation, novel tech and potential therapies, and the relationship between religion/spirituality and health.

Additionally, Dr. Hurst has served as a Chaplain in the US Air Force Reserve since 2011, currently holding the rank of Major, and is a 2023 graduate of the Air Command and Staff College.
