Dr. Manna’s lab utilizes primary airway tissue cultures and traditional cell-lines to investigate topics including biomarkers of inhaled toxins, mechanisms of inhaled toxins, human-based lung carcinoma models, and the non-antibiotics effects of macrolide antibiotics.
Dr. Manna received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stockton University and his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Rowan University. During his PhD research under the mentorship of Dr. Salvatore Caradonna, Dr. Manna developed and optimized protocols for the isolation, expansion, differentiation, and histological processing of human nasal epithelial cells. He became interested in the range of research applications of this airway model system and how it could be implemented to replace the use of certain animal-based studies.
Dr. Manna invented a research device that enables e-cigarette vapors to be generated and delivered to the surface of the airway tissue cultures, allowing for animal-free investigations in e-cigarette toxicity. His laboratory uses in-vitro primary airway tissue cultures and traditional cell-lines for a variety of research projects aimed at generating translational data on the pathogenesis and treatment of respiratory conditions including asthma, cancer, and inhaled toxins.
