Dr. Orbell began her work at VHA through the Patient Safety Advanced Fellowship where she developed and implemented a quality improvement project aimed at the safe handling of insulin pump cartridges for diabetic Veterans. Her efforts on this work earned her the prestigious Gold Capstone Award and led to her receipt of VHF’s Medical Education and Patient Safety (MEPS) award.

Dr. Orbell earned a PhD in Nursing research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing where she studied sleep and care-seeking behavior in adults at risk for obstructive sleep apnea and her master’s degree in nursing from Carlow University, with a focus on nursing education and leadership. She is an active member of the American Society of Peri Anesthesia Nurses, where she has been involved in setting and revising standards of nursing care and is a 2022 recipient of the Above and Beyond Service Recognition Award.
