Sarah Forster, PhD
Dr. Sarah Forster is a licensed clinical psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist with over 20 years of experience in clinical science and human subjects research. Her research advances precision treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) by integrating cognitive neuroscience and behavioral science. She uses techniques such as EEG, ERP, and fMRI to investigate neural mechanisms of cognitive control and risky decision-making and their relationship to treatment response and recovery. Bridging basic and applied science, her work identifies brain-based and behavioral predictors of treatment outcomes among Veterans and translates these insights into novel, patient-centered interventions that address clinical vulnerabilities. A central focus is personalizing evidence-based treatments widely disseminated within the VA, including Prize-Based Contingency Management, to better meet individual needs. More recently, she has extended this work into mobile health, developing Veteran-centric tools that support recovery through real-time risk detection and just-in-time adaptive interventions.
